ASCII - "American Standard Code for Information Interchange", common set of characters encoded by their order in the English alphabet
Avatar - a graphical representation of an internet user; can be 3-D as in a game or 2-D as on a forum
BFDL - "benevolent dictator for life", a general term for someone who resolves conflicts within an online community
Black hat - the bad guy, commonly a hacker
Blinkies - animated images, usually gifs
Blogging - creating web logs aka "blogs"
Chatroulette - a website linking random people for webcam conversations
Digerati - the internet elite
Distributed moderation - system allowing users to self-moderate their own content
Egosurfing - surfing the web to further one's ego, i.e. Googling one's own name
Flaming - blatant insults among users
Goldbricking - aka cyberslacking, using the internet for personal reasons while appearing to use it for work/school
Griefer - a harasser
Hacker - individual committed to the usurpation of internet security
Hit-and-run - when a user posts on a forum and leaves immediately after
Image macro - image with inscribed text, generally intended to be humorous
Internaut - advanced internet user, commonly designers
Internet time - idea that everything moves faster with the internet
Kuso - internet parody
Leet - use of various ASCII characters to represent normal letters
Lurker - user who views discussions, but rarely or never takes part
Mouse potato - couch potato, but replacing television with internet
Net legends - online personalities who have influenced the Internet as we now know it
Netiquette - social conventions for the internet
Netocracy - the supposed internet upper-class who base their status on internet skills
Noob - unexperienced user, used commonly as a derogatory term
One percent rule - states that the quantity of internet users posting content online represents one percent of all internet users
Open source - practice that promotes public access to a product's source code
Otherkin - humans claiming to be mythical/legendary creatures (like vampires)
Padonki - comical use of misspelling
Philes - files related to hacking
Phishing - practice of pretending to be a trustworthy entity in order to steal personal information
Signature tag - small images/short text which accompanies forum posts
Smiley - text used to represent actual emotion
Spam - use of messaging systems to send unwanted messages in large quantities
Troll - user who attempts to gain infamy through undesirable actions
