These SSL certificates will be signed by this project ("The OpenCert Project"

, not a commercial certificate authority. We'll run our own CA.
The certificates given will probably not be recognized by many browsers and may give a "Certificate not trusted" error (although we'll try to work with people to get our root cert in a few browsers and OSes). But your users will still be able to verify the security of your website by checking it against OpenCert.
These certs are similar to self-signed certificates, in the aspect that they will not initially be trusted by many browsers, but they will all be signed by the same CA (OpenCert), so your users can add the OpenCert root certificate to their browser(s) and OS to avoid errors.

It can cost $100,000 to get a new root authority accepted, and people don't generally want to resort to manually installing the authority cert or resorting to angry pop-ups or red bars in browsers. You can chain through a recognized root authority on your own server, but this is not possible across other servers.

Root authorities are nothing but the Internet mob, forcing your payment for a false sense of security. They, intern, take all the collective revenue and pay off the OS and browser makers to be recognized as official security guards.

Myself. lol
You will be able to put a verification image on your website that verifies that the URL in the HTTP Referer (sic) is signed by OpenCert (this new CA), and we'll have measures to make sure the person signing up for the certificate is the owner of the website.
