It`s been fifteen minutes, and my mother still lies on the floor, barely concious. I get up to get my phone, so I can call for help, but by the time I get back to her, she`s sitting up.
"Are you okay?" she asks in a whisper.
I laugh, "Are you?" she nods, glancing up at me. Her face is spotted with bruises, from where she fell on the floor. You can see the horror filling in her eyes, so fearful, that woman. For a moment, we just stare off into nowhere, thinking. When I come back to reality, I see that she`s looking at me.
"What?" I ask, my voice sounding weak.
I think you should go to your grandmother`s house for the weekend." she said, hesitantly.
"Me? What about you, mom?" I ask.
"I`ll be alright, Sage. As a mother, you`re my first priority." She wraps me in a hug, and adds, "Besides I have some business to take care of for work."
She held me for what seemed like forever. She began to hum an old hymne, and I could feel myself drifting to sleep.
"Tomorrow," my mother says, I open my eyes, "Tomorrow when you get home from school, we`ll make dinner and watch a movie before your grandma comes to pick you up."
"Alright," I say, yawning.
"Go on to bed now. Goodnight.
..............................
I wake up, this time to the sound of my clock, I push the dismiss button and get up to take a shower.
When I get out, I hear my mother talking on the phone. I`m only able to pick out parts of what she`s saying.
"2:00..yes..five is fine..you sure..alright"
I meet her in the kitchen, and she flashes me a genuine smile. How can you smile after what had happened only hours earlier?
My mother was whisking away at the eggs, while I was flipping bacon. "Who was that? On the phone, I mean."
"Oh nevermind that, it was just your grandmother," she said while plating eggs.
We sat down and ate in silence. My head held a million questions, but I knew they can`t be answered, at least not now.
