nope. i have tried but even before that i knew i couldnt because the 3DS game cards have a small extension sticking out from the top right which makes it ONLY playable on 3DS.
No, the 3DS is new system and their game can not be played on older system. Not just because "3DS game cards have little extensions sticking out of the cards"...

Sir - the DSi's, DS Lite and DS Phat D-pad actually all have 8 directions, because it has sensors on the diagonals, you notice it by pushing up right / left or down right /left at the same time, so technically 3DS Games could run on DSi's d-pad if it was possible, because 3DS's slide-pad has 8 directions only, i believe it is digitally made to process 16 or 32 depending of the pressure you put the combination of 2 directions may generate another direction if the software is optimized to recognize so, so its hard to know, but hipotetically; the hardware of DS system's d-pad and 3DS's slide-pad is very similar and 3DS games could (virtually) be controlled with both.
It has to do more with hardware...
