You don't have to have a phone number, but you lose login info then you may need one.

@GuiedGui well when i was in public school me and my friend made a gmail acc to play games with i needed him to make it because i dont have a phone number so we did it and we both still use it to this day but i cant make another gmail

But you should stick with the big email server providers like Gmail or Yahoo or whatever because the other ones might not get the email to begin with iirc
